I think the Decemberists are one of the most promising bands to come along in years. With their sweeping epic songs about love, the sea, and revenge, they weave interesting stories that last forever. Bjork is also a very respectable artist that I think is worth seeing. If she's appearing in one of these cities below then go see her because there won't be many opportunities in the United States to see her.

Here's a bigger act, THE POLICE!, I haven't seen these guys yet but everybody tells me they haven't lost anything over the years.

Another very popular artist, but in a more Indie sense is Bright Eyes. His poetic song writing is very masterful and the songs are nice to listen too.
